Alarming rise in crime against women in Haryana

Tabinda Gani rape and murder caseIn a rather dubious record, Haryana ranks third in the country when it comes to atrocities against women. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has received 1,720 complaints, the third highest number of cases of crime against women from Haryana during the year 2014-15. The State trails Uttar Pradesh with 19,385 complaints and Delhi with 3,618 cases of crime against women registered with NCW during 2014-15.

A majority of 433 complaints from Haryana were of police apathy where victims failed to get their complaints registered. The other cases were of domestic violence/matrimonial dispute, property disputes, rape cases, harassment, dowry sexual harassment at work place. NCW’s data shows that during 2014-15, the Commission received 199 complaints related to domestic violence, 70 related to rape case, 39 attempt to rape, 23 dowry deaths, 44 dowry harassment/dowry deaths, 32 harassment at workplace, 30 kidnapping/abduction, 136 outraging modesty of women, 29 police harassment/atrocities of police, 60 property relates, 130 complaints related to right to live with dignity, 25 service matter, 28 complaints by in-laws, 19 deprivation of women rights, 4 sex selective abortion/female foeticide, 41 violence against women, 35 sexual harassment including cases at workplace, 16 right to exercise choice of marriage, 2 stalking among other complaints from Haryana.
