GURDASPUR – Two unidentified youths today threw acid on sportswoman Rajwinder Kaur. The victim was returning home after her Class XII exam at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Kahnuwan, 16 km from Gurdaspur, when two youths, their faces covered, pounced on her, a few metres from her house. “They poured a can of acid on her face,” Gurdaspur SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor said.
Till the filing of the report, investigations in the case were on. “A case will be registered on the conclusion of the investigation. “We have formed several teams to look for the accused,” Toor said.
A top officer said the police had identified the attackers and they would be nabbed by tomorrow morning. The motive of the crime could not be ascertained. Rajwinder Kaur has excelled in netball and hammer throw.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhinav Trikha ordered a survey of shops selling acid without permission. “We will not allow the culprits to go scot free. Such incidents will not be tolerated at any cost,” he said.
The victim was rushed to the nearby Kahnuwan Community Health Centre by passersby where she was given first-aid by Dr Ajay Kumar. In view of the grave injuries suffered by the victim, the doctor referred her to the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital. Later, Rajwinder Kaur’s family admitted her to a private hospital in Amritsar.
