One arrested in Hindu Yuva Vahini leader murder caseDEHRADUN: Pauri police on Wednesday arrested one Deepak Rawat, a resident of Maanpur in Kotdwar, for his alleged involvement in the murder of Hindu Yuva Vahini leader Sumit Patwal.

During interrogation, Rawat confirmed that Patwal had reportedly been murdered due to a fraud in a land deal.

Patwal was shot dead from point blank range by two bike-borne assailants near Lalpur square under Kotdwar police station on March 22. During investigation, it was found that Patwal had some cases against him and was involved in matters related to land dealing.

Through CCTV footage, cops found that the motorcycle used in the crime had been parked near the bus stand. From there, a person took them to another location on his bike.

“We found out that Rawat took the assailants to Govind Nagar area from where they took a jeep to Haridwar district,” Pauri SP Ajay Joshi told TOI.

According to reports, land dealer Surendra Negi had hired Haridwar residents Vishal Kumar and Jolly to eliminate Patwal. Negi had given them an advance of Rs 25,000 and assured to pay Rs 2.25 lakh after the murder.

Sources said that Patwal had taken Rs 5 lakh for a land deal in Jhandichaud village from Negi in January 2014. He had, however, returned only Rs 2 lakh.

“An argument broke out between the two parties and they threatened to eliminate each other,” said Joshi, while adding that after waiting for some time, Negi hatched a conspiracy to kill Patwal.

“Negi told Rawat that two persons will come to Kotdwar on a motorcycle and he will assist them in the crime,” said the police official. The role of Rawat was to help Jolly and Vishal identify Patwal and after the crime, take them to a location from where they could get a shared cab to Haridwar.

“Efforts are on to arrest the others involved in the crime,” said Joshi.
