VASCO: Even as the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day on Sunday, two separate incidents of sexual crimes against two minor girls have been reported in Vasco.
While one accused was arrested late Thursday night in connection with the crime on Tuesday, the other accused was arrested on Tuesday on charges of molesting a minor girl on January 16.
Mormugao police arrested Mangesh Wadekar late Thursday night on charges of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old minor girl from Sada-Vasco.
Mormugao PI Kapil Nayak said the incident was reported on March 3, when Wadekar had called the girl to his house on the pretext of supervising her studies.
“The minor girl, who had lost her mother, used to stay with her father in a rented room at Sada. The girl used to be alone at home, while the father would go out to work,” said PI Nayak.
Wadekar, who resides with her sister adjacent to the girl’s house, called the girl on March 3 on the pretext of supervising her studies. The accused then allegedly began fondling her private parts and later sexually assaulted the girl.
“After committing the crime, the accused threatened the victim not to disclose the incident to anyone,” said PI Nayak.
“The girl initially did not report the matter to her father out of fear, but she later began to complain of abdominal pain and then narrated the incident to her father on Thursday,” PI Nayak added.
The father immediately lodged a police complaint with Mormugao police and acting on the complaint, Wadekar was arrested under Sections 376, 506, Section 8 (2) of Goa Children’s Act and Section 3 read with 4 of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offence Act 2012. The girl was being counselled by an NGO on Friday evening and she is expected to be sent for a medical checkup.
Wadekar was produced before the JMFC court at Vasco on Friday and has been remanded to seven days in police custody, as police investigations are in progress.
In the second incident, Mormugao police on Tuesday arrested Kishor Satardekar (27) of Sada-Vasco on charges of molesting a 9-year-old girl on January 16.
According to Mormugao police, Satardekar had allegedly molested the girl, when she had gone to a shop at Sada. Locals then reported the matter to the Mormugao police and the police had advised the mother to file a complaint.
The mother had, however, declined to file the police complaint on grounds that her husband is abroad and that she needed to consult him.
Later on January 29, Satardekar allegedly made vulgar gestures while the child was proceeding to school. When the girl reported the matter to her mother, the woman then alerted her husband in the Gulf and he called up the Mormugao police to lodge the police complaint.
In the meanwhile, Satardekar proceeded to the Gulf for employment.
Following his arrival from the Gulf on March 3, Satardekar surrendered before a court and was later arrested under Sections 509, 354 of IPC, Section 8 (2) of Goa Children’s Act and Section 7 read with 4 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences.
Mormugao police said that the JMFC at Vasco has remanded Satardekar to seven days in police custody, as investigations are underway.
