Wanted gangster Bhura caughtNEW DELHI: With a hunt on for the killers of ex-MLA Bharat Singh, another dangerous criminal landed in the police net on Saturday. Amit Malik alias Bhura, who is named in 40 cases—14 in Delhi, 20 in UP, three in Uttarakhand, two in Punjab and one in Haryana—and carries a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head was caught around 11am in Patiala district of Punjab.

Sources said Bhura (29) was caught after he had a fight with the other gangsters accompanying him. Whether someone from his group tipped off police or an outsider made the call is not known.

Police in Delhi, Uttarakhand and UP had been looking for Bhura ever since he escaped from the custody of Uttarakhand Police on December 15 taking the AK47 guns of the constables who had escorted him to a court in Baghpat. Delhi Police’s special cell had booked him under the stringent MCOCA.

Bhura, a sharpshooter, had been working with gangsters Neeraj Bawana and Vikas Langarpuria in Delhi and was helping them expand their network in Delhi, Haryana, UP and Uttarakhand while also giving them the upper hand in land disputes with rivals in southwest Delhi.

While Uttarakhand Police will get Bhura’s custody for now, Delhi Police too will interrogate him, sources confirmed. Congress member and former MLA from Mundka, Rambir Shokin, who allegedly helped Bhura escape through his relative, Bawana, will also be interrogated. Police had summoned him for questioning earlier also.

Bhura, police said, has been active in the world of crime for 13 years. He is involved in more than 50 cases of murder and extortion. He had joined the Sunil Rathi gang, and carried out several crimes across the country. He was arrested by Haridwar police in August last year in connection with a shootout outside Roorkee Jail in which three people were killed.

Rathi had hatched this conspiracy to eliminate his rival, Cheenu Pandit. On August 5, Bhura and other members of the Rathi gang opened fire on Pandit when he was released on bail. While Pandit escaped unhurt, three members of his gang were killed.

After that incident, Rathi was shifted to a jail in Uttarakhand’s Pauri district.
